Senator Durazo Issues Statement on Governor Newsom’s May Revision to State Budget

SACRAMENTO -  Senator María Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s May revision to the proposed state budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year:

“Governor Newsom’s proposal to scale back Medi-Cal coverage for undocumented Californians is deeply concerning and contradicts California’s core values. No other group is being singled out so directly in these cuts. We cannot accept a budget that abandons those who power our state—construction workers, domestic service workers, and farmworkers. Denying them access to basic healthcare means forcing them to wait until they are gravely ill before seeking medical help. That is not only cruel—it is fiscally irresponsible.

During the pandemic, we rightly recognized undocumented workers as essential. Now, we are being pressured to treat them as disposable. The COVID-19 pandemic made it clear that public health is interconnected—we are all healthier when every Californian has access to care. This budget is an opportunity for California to lead with its values and protect healthcare for the workforce that sustains this economy. I urge my colleagues in the Legislature to reject these cuts and ensure that every Californian has access to the healthcare they need and deserve.”
