Sen. María Elena Durazo’s Statement on the Discussion with Gov. Newsom and Central American Community Leaders about the Causes of Migration

SACRAMENTO – California Senator María Elena Durazo (D-Los Ángeles) issued the following statement on the round table discussion hosted by Governor Gavin Newsom with Central American community leaders about the causes of migration:

“I commend Governor Newsom for his leadership and am grateful to join the conversation with our community leaders about the root causes for migration.

I have spent most of my adult life working with immigrant families. I have found that what drives immigrants to come to California is what forces them to leave their respective countries. They live in war, poverty and suffer violence against their families. That is why they risk their lives crossing the border.

I look forward to working with Governor Newsom on California’s efforts to provide relief and humanitarian aid to asylum seekers fleeing poverty and violence in their home countries.”
