Tribute to SHeroes
When he was a member of the Assembly representing the 51st District, Senator Price, recognizing that some of the hardest working members of a community are its women, created the SHeroes event, which honors extraordinary women in his district.
In 2007 and 2008, he selected 51 SHeroes to honor in his Assembly district. In May 2009, he was elected to the California Senate to represent the 26th district. In 2009, he decided to honor his former District, the 51st Assembly District, and his current District, the 26th Senate District. There were 25 SHeroes selected from the 51st AD and 26 from the 26th SD with one special woman, Loretta Jones of Healthy African American Families, II, receiving the Rose Award.
In 2010, he selected 26 SHeroes from the 26th Senate District. At the banquet, Speaker Emeritus Assemblywoman Karen Bass gave the official welcome. Congresswoman Diane Watson was the recipient of the Rose Award for extraordinary service to the community.
To arrive at his list of SHeroes, Senator Price solicits nominations from his former SHeroes, from local elected officials, chambers of commerce, neighborhood councils, homeowners associations and the communities of his district, at large.
These women have demonstrated leadership, pride, volunteerism and commitment to their community in a remarkable manner.
At the awards ceremony, each SHero is escorted down an aisle and presented to Senator Price. He presents each honoree with a certificate from the California State Senate and a red rose. Then each honoree is photographed with her Senator. During the presentation, a Mistress of Ceremonies reads a short biography on each SHero.
