Senator Durazo Responds to Governor Newsom's Revised Budget Proposal

SACRAMENTO - In response to Governor Gavin Newsom's revised state budget proposal, Senator María Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) issued the following statement:

"Governor Newsom’s revised budget is a bold proposal that makes clear that recovery in California does not simply mean going back to normal. This past year has made crystal clear the deep inequities that exist across our state. The pandemic has shed new light on our workplaces, including pervasive wage theft, dangerous & unhealthy working conditions, lack of access to healthcare, and the right for working people to earn a good living. This budget will go a long way in stemming and reversing some of this generational damage.

The prioritization of Medi-Cal inclusion for undocumented seniors over 60 years old in the May Revision is the result of years of tireless work from advocates and will make a difference in the lives of tens of thousands of Californians, their families, and their communities. This has always been a campaign about expanding health care for all, regardless of immigration status, as a basic human right. I stand with advocates to secure affordable healthcare for all Californians.

California workers are the backbone of our powerful economy, but our success cannot be at the expense of working people. Governor Newsom’s budget on workforce development is a clear commitment to create good-paying, green jobs and an effective, just model for a new economy that rewards High Road Employer-Labor Partnerships in emerging, current, and green industries. 

Finally, this budget proposal addresses the pressing housing needs of all Californians, from ending the deep homelessness crisis our state faces, to the creation of more affordable housing, to knocking down barriers to homeownership to build family wealth, to keeping existing tenants in their homes with the support of a comprehensive legal aid program."
